The Great Market Hall stands beside Fővám tér at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge. Its address is 1093 Budapest, Vámház boulevard 1–3, making it easy to pair a market visit with a walk along the Danube or across the bridge. A one-day Budapest walk from the Parliament Quarter can also help you plan a day around the area.

The hall opened in 1897, designed by Hungarian architect Samu Pecz. Zsolnay porcelain tiles decorate its roof, and the building was declared a monument in 1976.

What You’ll Find Inside the Market

The market’s floors have distinct roles: everyday groceries and Hungarian products fill the ground floor, while the basement and upper gallery offer different kinds of shopping and food. The Budapest tourism site gives the hall’s area as 10,000 square metres.

On the ground floor, stalls sell fruit, vegetables, meat and baked goods, alongside Hungarian products such as salami, paprika, garlic, pálinka, wine and honey. The basement has shops selling game and fish, household-appliance vendors and a supermarket.

Upstairs, you’ll find souvenir and gift shops, restaurants and a food court. If you want to browse before eating, start on the ground floor, then head up to see the range of food and gifts.

The upper gallery is the place to look for prepared Hungarian dishes. Options include lángos, Hortobágy pancakes filled with meat and stuffed cabbage; Budapest’s tourism site also names goulash, pörkölt and strudel among the dishes available upstairs.

For a little fresh air after browsing, a square across from the hall has benches where you can sit.
